Each Monday, Daphne’s Dandelions hosts Harvest Monday where everyone can share links to their harvest for the week. It’s fun to see what everyone is gathering from his or her gardens in different areas.
It was hot and humid this past week in Maine. We had a nice break from the humidity this weekend after the hurricane passed us by. This allowed us to catch up on some gardening and yard work. The garden is growing like crazy and so are the weeds. I tried dodging rain showers on Friday to get some of the beds weeded and finally finished on Saturday.
One weed I didn’t toss away was Purslane. It is growing like crazy in the garden this year. I’ve been adding it to scrambled eggs, salads, and even used some in a stir fry:
I pulled one bulb of garlic to see how it was coming along. This one is pretty good sized. There are still a few more weeks to go before the full harvest:
Lettuce was given one more trim before the heat settled in. All but the forellenschluss lettuce bolted during the hot spell. It still looks pretty, but the outer leaves are bitter. I will let it grow as feed for the chickens until it bolts:
Lots and lots of kale harvested this week. Most was blanched and frozen to enjoy this winter and some of the more ragged foliage was fed to the chickens:
The girls have been very busy. Our egg count dipped a bit during our hot spell, but this weekend they are back on track. Sunday all of them stood in line for the egg boxes:
The weekend was very dry and on Sunday I harvested my first batch of chamomile:
The heat and rain has the garden growing by leaps and bounds. It won’t be long now until the summer crops begin to trickle in.
